PHP User Group meetup

Finally got some time to post this! So this Tuesday the first meeting of the PHP User Group of Mauritius took place.

I was one of two speakers picked to speak. Chervine went up first and told us how meeting other people through groups like the MSCC had changed his life. He seems to really like what he’s doing and he seems to be doing really well for himself in the Microsoft space. Great presentation overall.

I spoke next. I had not planned on doing a technical talk, so I briefly recapped my experience with PHP over the last three years, starting in Malaysia in freelance with a project for Red Bull Malaysia, some projects in Mauritius, through to AfricaPay, working with Jochen on a SaaS product in Germany and now MakerHub that we are building on Laravel. I also presented an overview of the Laravel ecosystem, Laracasts, PHP the right way, Packagist and answered some questions from the audience.

Afterwards some of us ended up at flying dodo for beers and I had the opportunity to get to know everyone a bit better.

I’d really like to congratulate Nadhir and Wassim for putting this together. Extension Interactive is a great location and I’m looking forward to more meetups in the future. I especially hope to add some of my entrepreneurship knowledge to the mix, from what I learned at Turbine and with my own experience starting a company.
